Taxable earnings related to religious organization?
Ruth recently became a member of a religious order. As a member, she was subject to the organization’s complete control. The organization often required its members to terminate their employment in order to work in other jobs consistent with the organization’s philosophy. For example, the organization supplied personnel to missions, hospitals, and schools. The organization also requires all members to take an oath of poverty and pay over all their earnings to it. Members’ living expenses are paid for by the organization out of its own funds. Is Ruth taxed on her earnings?
