What was the staple food of crusader and muslim armies during the crusades ?

If I had to guess, they probably slaughtered some camels, goats and made stew. I think they adapted the Bedouin lifestyle in the desert. It's the only logical way of surviving in the desert. This is from Salahudin's army and as for the Christians, I believe they slaughtered there horse out in the battle field. In Jerusalem, I can't imagine there food being any different today. My family is from Iraq and the dish has been around for hundreds of years...
